Last week, I was walking along a beach at night with friend H and friend R, as friend R was leaving to go to Tokyo for a year..
And walking along a beach in the dark is what you do, of course.
Anyway, discussion got around to where you would put your Ultimate Fort:
-On a hill
-In a forest
-On a beach
Initially I said on the beach, because the water provides easy access for supplies, you could jump into the water if you got shot at [thank you mythbusters] and if all else fails, you could throw sand in the enemies' eyes.
Friend H said the beach because it's pretty.
Friend R said the forest, because you could hide in the trees, make weapons out of the wood and find food easily.
Then we had the on a hill debate.. I liked the idea as you could see your enemy coming and it would be easier for you to fight downhill. R pointed out that your enemy could see you if you were on a hill and it would probably be easier to lay siege to it and starve you to defeat.
Eventually, I decided that my fort would be built on a hill, surrounded by forest, leading onto a beach.. Like so:

And of course my fort would be made of stone because it doesn't burn, can be built thick enough to be blast-resistant, easyish to repair and looks quite nice. It would have a moat because if an attacker went/fell in you could probably hear it and it's a good place to keep a supply of fish if you don't want to go all the way down to that lake that's on the other side of my fort.
But THEN I started thinking about all the extras that I would have..
Like an underground cave [complete with tunnel leading straight to the beach in case of forest fire].
And a runway for my fighter jets.
And a radar and satellite communication system.
And traps that I could lay in the forest, Viet-Cong style.
And tree house outposts.
And so on.
I did briefly think about adding in a jungle layer.. but then I realised that jungles have lots of insects and leeches and quite a few parasites in general. So that was a no-go. Besides, jungle floor would be too dense to get through.. meaning supplies difficult to get..and if you were to have a way through then enemies could go through it too.. and taking things up trees and across would be soo tiring. Especially with livestock.
So my question is, what would your Ultimate Fort be like, and where would it be set?
Don't lie and say you haven't thought about it.
I know you have.

ok so my ultimate fort would be on a mountain a little out of range of a forest, and beach in the general vicinity. And why you might ask? (btw my inner nerd is about to come out)
well, my logic is, if you have a beach/ocean and then forest, the enemy can't bring that much heavy artillery (tanks, cars..cannons) they'd pretty much could only take what they could carry, unless they decide to cut all the trees down, but that would defeat the purpose of a sneak attack. Now my fort will be built into the mountain. It won't be a castle or a building..because those are easy to attack. I'd tunnel deep into the mountain and have a kick ass reinforced lair. Complete with underground caves and tunnels that lead to the ocean. And one of my underground caves would have direct access to my submarine, should I have to escape....wow im so weird..
this was a long comment..lol

omg doxy, you're actually osama bin laden!!
see i was thinking my castle would be lord-of-the-rings-completely-impossible-to-destroy style. And I would be smart and not have a major weak point in the form of one sewer gratey thing.
I'd also have a massive panic room. Except with working phone lines. And broadband.
Oh and actually, I'd like to have a similar system to London with the massive-underground-nuclear-bunker-that-nobody-knew-about-but-goes-on-for-miles-and-miles-and-even-had-it's-own-railway-network-but-they-recently-decided-to-get-rid-of-all-the-supplies-in-it-so-everybody-know-now..
Hey, that's not true.. Osama ensured a hair dye supply in his plan..
